Wendell Ivor Hughes, 91, a resident of Bettendorf, died Sunday, November 6, 2016 at the Iowa Masonic Health Facility in Bettendorf.
Funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Friday, November 11, 2016 beginning with a Masonic Service at 11:00 a.m. at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Genesis Hospice.
Born on July 14, 1925 in Columbus Junction, Iowa, Wendell was the son of John and Zelma (Tutt) Hughes. On December 6, 1947 in Washington, Iowa, he married Elaine Idell Rose. She preceded him in death on June 29, 2014.
Wendell entered the United States Navy in 1943 and served his country during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He worked as a heating technician at Alcoa, retiring in 1979 after 31 years of service.
Wendell was a member of the Bettendorf Presbyterian Church, Bettendorf Masonic Lodge #664 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughter, Cinda (Steve) Beert of Blue Grass; sons, Donald Hughes of Eldridge and Ronald (Kris Adams) Hughes of Kahoka, Missouri; grandchildren, Chad (Amy) Beert and Amy (Steve Nordeen) Beert; great-grandchildren, William, Olivia and Eden Beert-Nordeen and Landon and Hannah Beert; and a sister, Wilma (Stan) Leach of Moline, Illinois.
In addition to his wife, Elaine, Wendell was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Donna Caldwell.
