Alan K. Kay, 82, a resident of Eldridge, Iowa died on Monday, May 1, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa after an extended illness.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, June 3rd at the Eldridge United Methodist Church where he was charter member. As we know Alan was a laid-back guy, please be comfortable, leave the ties and dresses at home and wear your comfortable pair of jeans. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Eldridge United Methodist Church or the Eldridge Volunteer Fire Department. Chambers Funeral Home of Eldridge is assisting the family with arrangements.
Alan was born in Davenport, Iowa on December 6, 1940, the son of Karl and Elsie (Stender) Kay and was a member of the first graduating class of North Scott High School in 1959.
On January 2, 1968, he was united in marriage to Carol A. Kinner in Iowa City, Iowa.
Alan worked at the U. S. Army Aviation Support Facility in Mt. Joy, Iowa as an Aircraft Mechanic for over 25 years, retiring in 1991. He also honorably served in the Iowa National Guard for over 25 years. Following in his father’s footsteps he was a proud member of the Eldridge Volunteer fire department for many years. He was also a member of the Civil Air Patrol.
Alan was a talented woodworker who enjoyed working with his hands and could repair virtually anything. He was always happy to help a friend or neighbor with a project, often only accepting payment in food or beverage. He and Carol enjoyed traveling and loved frequent day trips to visit area wineries and other areas of interest. He will be remembered for always welcoming people with a big smile, a joke, and a sarcastic comment, and for usually being the tallest man in the room. He found joy in the simple things in life, a cup of coffee on the porch, a good book, or time with friends and family.
Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife, Carol; his children, Brian (Amy) Kay of Clive, Iowa, and Melissa (Patrick) Parker of Clinton, Iowa; his grandchildren, Allison and Kathleen Lyddon, and Kathryn, Jacob, and Emily Parker; his brother, Richard Kay of Seattle, Washington, and niece Jennifer Adams of Austin, Texas.
Alan was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Judy Adams.
