Albert E. Mertl, 91, a resident of Hope Creek Care Center in East Moline, died Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Edgewood Baptist Church, Missions Fund in Rock Island. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home of Bettendorf, Iowa is assisting the family with arrangements.
Albert was born November 15, 1919 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Joseph & Frances (Vavrinek) Mertl. He was united in marriage to Eileen Helm on December 15, 1945 in Milwaukee.
During World War II, he served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1945.
Al was retired as a steamfitter/pipefitter after several years of employment at Alcoa. He enjoyed music, keyboards and fishing.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Eileen; his daughters and sons-in-law, Mary & John Hartman of East Moline and Linda & Bob Wennerstrom of Bloomington, Minnesota; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and one brother.
