Alice Dykes

Alice J. “Nan” Dykes, 81, of Bettendorf passed away on Monday, February 13, 2023 at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Noon on Monday, February 20th at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to the family.

Alice was born on July 24, 1941 in Crowder, Missouri, the daughter of Dewell and Lue Elta (Jones) Wise.  On July 12, 1969, she married Alto Dewayne Dykes at Valley General Baptist Church in Bettendorf.  Prior to her retirement in 1989, Alice worked for Northwestern Bell Co. (later AT&T) where she worked in various departments including switchboard operator, store room, call center, and the engineering department.  She was an integral force in fighting for equal pay for women in the workplace during her career at the phone company.  In retirement, Alice became active in fostering children with special needs.  Her compassion for others was also noted in her support of our local veterans.  Alice enjoyed bowling and competed across the U.S. in various tournaments.  Her love of family inspired her love of genealogy, and her most cherished activity was spending time with her grandsons and attending their Judo tournaments.

Those left to honor her memory are her husband of almost 54 years, Dewayne Dykes of Bettendorf; daughter, Dana (Scott) Swearinger of Bettendorf; grandsons, Brett (Jersey) Dykes of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Brandon (Sarah) Swearinger of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, Brock (Izzy Sheumaker) Swearinger of Bettendorf; and brother, Ernie (Sharon) Wise of Blue Grass.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, Joe Wise and Maxine Gheer.
