Alvin Roy Smith, 95, a resident of Bettendorf, died Monday, February 8, 2016 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.
Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 12, 2016 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Friday. Memorials may be made to Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
Born on March 9, 1920 in Tipton, Iowa, Alvin was the son of Guy W. and Alfa May (Chandler) Smith. On October 14, 1943 in San Francisco, California, he married Janice Schow. She preceded him in death on August 6, 2007.
Alvin served his country in the United States Army from 1942 – 1944 during World War II. He farmed in his younger days and then worked for Phillips Petroleum for 30 years, retiring in 1980.
He was a member of the Silver Service and Plus 60 Club. Alvin enjoyed working in his yard, gardening, fishing and traveling.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Robert Schaapveld of Muscatine, Iowa; grandchildren, Matthew Schaapveld and his wife, Heather of Bettendorf and Daniel Schaapveld and his wife, Amanda of Muscatine; great-grandchildren, Aiden and Evangelina “Evie”; and a sister, Ruby Darlene Grable of Tucson, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and brothers, Gale, Vernon, Verle, DeWayne and Lyle.
