Alvin G. “Whitey” Mohr, 92, a life-long Eldridge, Iowa farmer died on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Faith Lutheran Church of Eldridge where he & his wife, Barbara were charter members. Burial with military honors will be in Pine Hill Cemetery of Davenport. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Friday at the church and one hour prior to services on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church. Chambers Funeral Home of Eldridge is assisting the family with arrangements.
He was born on the family farm in rural Eldridge on January 11, 1922, the son of Herbert C. & Emma (Ewoldt) Mohr and was a 1940 graduate of Davenport High School. Whitey enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and was trained as a pilot and flight instructor. After his honorable discharge in 1945, he continued to serve in the U.S. Naval Reserve and was discharged as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in 1958.
On May 21, 1944, he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Barbara J. Horton in Davenport.
Whitey and his family spent many years farming west of Eldridge and in 1981, he decided to retire from active farming. For many years, he traveled to Canada for annual fishing trips with his friends and family. Whitey & Barbara were long-time members of two card clubs and loved to play cards with their many friends. One of the highlights of Whitey’s life was traveling to Washington D.C. aboard the Honor Flight with other World War II veterans.
Never one to be inactive, Whitey served and volunteered for a multitude of community activities. He was a Sheridan Township School Director, a 4-H club leader, a member of the Scott County Farm Bureau Board, served as membership chairman of the Scott County Farm Bureau and was a member of the Scott County Extension Council. In addition, he was a member of the Scott County Pork Producers, the Scott County Beef Producers, the North Scott Athletic Boosters, the Faith Lutheran Church Council and the Sheridan Township Fire District. Whitey served on the board of the Eldridge CO-OP and the board of the Central Trust & Savings Bank. He was a 70-year member of the American Legion Post 639 and a 70-year member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge. Additional memberships included the North Scott Rotary Club, Philbrook Masonic Lodge of Davenport, the North Scott Masonic Lodge, the Izaac Walton League where he was a life-member and the Davenport Moose Club.
Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife of nearly 70 years, Barbara; his sons, Dennis Mohr of Eldridge, Alan (Michelle Rolsch) Mohr of Eldridge, Larry Mohr of Donahue, Iowa and John (Cathy) Mohr of Eldridge; his grandchildren, Eric (Angela) Mohr & their children, Zac Wessel, Isabella Mohr & Arianna Mohr; Ryan (Leslie) Mohr & their children Madison Mohr & Alaina Mohr; Nathan Mohr & his fiancé, Holly, Jennifer (Dustin) Thornburg & their children, Grace Thornburg, Landon Thornburg & Charlee Thornburg; Logan Bunn, Alex Mohr and Logan Mohr.
Whitey was preceded in death by his son, David; his brothers, Roger and Earl; and his parents.
The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to all who have been so deeply caring to Whitey and all of his family during these past weeks.
