Alvin Valentine Holst, 90, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.
There will be a private service and burial at Davenport Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Davenport Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans or the Clarissa Cook Hospice House. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.
He was born on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1917 in LeClaire, Iowa, the son of James & Minnie (Lippold) Holst. He married Kathryn Dubil on October 26, 1945 in Forrestville, Maryland.
Alvin lived his entire life in rural Bettendorf in LeClaire Township operating a dairy and hog farm. He was active in 4-H during his boyhood years and received many awards.
He served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II in U.S. camps, Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland and Germany. He received 5 Battle Stars, the Purple Heart for being wounded in action in Stolburg, Germany and the D-Day/Battle of Normandy Medal. Alvin was a member & past-president of the 23rd engineer 3rd Armored Spearhead Division-Mississippi Valley Chapter, and a life-member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.
He was a member & past officer of the Scott County Farm Bureau and an Ottilie Seed Dealer. Alvin enjoyed being with his family, working outside on the farm and reading. He was a quiet mannered man with a good sense of humor. Alvin will be dearly missed by his family and those who knew him, but we celebrate and are grateful for his wonderful life of 90 years.
Alvin is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kathryn; his daughter & son-in-law, Sue & Bill Slavens and his son & daughter-in-law, Alvin Wayne & Diane Holst, all of Bettendorf; his grandchildren, Stacy (Jason) Volmer of Ankeny, Iowa, Sally Slavens of New York City, New York, Zachary (Brooke) Slavens of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Mindy (Tim) Miller of Ankeny; his great-grandchildren, Zoe Volmer and Emma & Dylan Miller; and many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Velma Spies and Irene Bowker; and his brothers, Eldon Holst and Donald Holst.
Alvin’s family would like to give special thanks for the care given by Dr. Edwards, Dr. Silverman, Genesis West medical staff and the Clarissa Cook Hospice House staff.
