Anthony "Tony" J. Castro

         Anthony “Tony” J. Castro, 85, of Bettendorf, passed away Monday, July 3, 2023 at the Kahl Home, Davenport.

          Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport.  Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

          Tony was born August 8, 1937 in Bettendorf, to David and Rebecca (Cordero) Castro.  He graduated from Bettendorf High School in 1956.  On March 29, 1961, he married Julia Prignitz in Iowa City.  Tony worked as a Quality Assurance Inspection Specialist at the Rock Island Arsenal for 33 years.  While working at the Arsenal, he was fortunate to travel all over the United States, Canada, and Mexico.  Together he and his wife owned and operated Los Amigos Restaurant in Bettendorf.  In retirement, Tony worked as a course ranger for Palmer Hills Golf Course. 

          Tony was a community minded individual and served for two terms on the Bettendorf School Board.  He also served as the commissioner for Bettendorf Pony Baseball.  He coached softball and hardball leagues, and was proud to have his namesake on the Tony Castro Baseball Field in Bettendorf.  Most importantly Tony was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

          Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Julia Castro of Bettendorf; his children, Tony A. Castro of Cedar Rapids, Teresa (Marc) Taubenfeld of Dallas, Texas, and Tom (Maria) Castro of Bettendorf; five grandchildren, William, Christopher, and Tia Taubenfeld, and Scott (Andrea) and Annalise Castro; and three siblings, Rita Lowry, David (Ruthann) Castro, and Richard (Cindy) Castro, all of Bettendorf.

          In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Chuck, and brother-in-law, Robert Lowry.
