Arnold J. Snyder, 78, of Bettendorf, died suddenly on Friday, June 13, 2008 at Trinity at Terrace Park, Bettendorf.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 A.M., Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. Burial with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 26 of Davenport will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the family.
Arnold was born December 8, 1929 in Davenport, the son of Ivan & Rose (Heindel) Snyder. He was united in marriage to Flora A. Hahn on June 6, 1953 in Davenport.
Arnold served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1953. He had worked at Alcoa, Davenport Works for 46 years and was currently president of S & W Manufacturing in Riverdale, Iowa. In earlier years, Arnold had served as a volunteer firefighter for Ridgeview, Iowa and Riverdale Volunteer Fire Departments.
Arnold was well known amongst his family and friends as the “candyman.” He was a devoted craftsman. He had made wheelbarrows from scratch and had worked extensively with metal, making Disney characters out of aluminum in earlier years. He also collected carousel horses and Coca-Cola memorabilia.
Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife of 55 years, Flora; his daughter, Cheryl (Jim) Gabriel, of Rock Island, Illinois; his son, Phillip (Penni) Snyder, of Bettendorf; his grandchildren, Heather (Jason) McCoy, of Mt. Joy, Iowa, Amanda (Tom) Labadie, of Chicago, Illinois, and Dustin Snyder, of Bettendorf; his great-grandchildren, Riley McCoy, Brayden Labadie and one expected next month; his sister, Delores Burroughs of Riverdale; his brother, Larry Snyder, of Reno, Nevada; and his nephews Clifford and Chester Burroughs whom were like sons to him.
Arnold was preceded in death by his parents.
