Barbara Jean Von Holdt

Barbara Jean Von Holdt, 95, a resident of Davenport, Iowa died on Friday, January 24, 2025, at MercyOne Genesis in Davenport.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, January 31, 2025, at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Bettendorf Lions Club or the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children.

She was born in Centerville, Iowa on July 11, 1929, the daughter of Otis and Ruth (Patterson) Johnson and was a graduate of Davenport High School. On June 6, 1948, Barb married James D. “Jim” Von Holdt in Davenport. He preceded her in death on February 11, 1995.

Barb was a devoted wife, loving mother and adoring grandma, great-grandma & great-great-grandma. In earlier years, she was active in the Bettendorf Lionels and was a founding member of St. James Lutheran Church of Bettendorf. Barb enjoyed being active in many community activities, loved playing cards with her friends and treasured the times spent with her beloved family.

For many years, Jim & Barb wintered in Florida with other Bettendorf friends. She enjoyed helping with the Bettendorf Lions Club activities and the Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA) Sorority. In their travels, Jim & Barb had visited the Panama Canal, Austria, Nova Scotia, Hawaii and across Canada and Alaska by train.

Those left to honor her memory include her daughter, Sue (Dr. Bill) Whisler of Bettendorf; her sons, Tom Von Holdt of Aurora, Colorado and Jim (Connie) Von Holdt of Bettendorf; her grandchildren, Dr. Curt (Cheri Beth) Whisler, Sarah (Dr. Robert) Knudson, Melissa (Erick) Graham, Tracy Purdy, Todd Von Holdt and Matt (Sarah) Von Holdt; eleven great-grandchildren; her great-great-grandchild, Alaska; and her sister, Joyce (Les) Weinkauf of Bettendorf.

In addition to her husband, Barb was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Johnson.
