Barbara Larsen Laake, 76, a resident of Davenport, died Thursday, January 24, 2008 at her home.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois. Those wishing to attend the service must meet at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf at 9:15 A.M. Wednesday. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.
Barbara was born September 13, 1931 in Nekoosa, Wisconsin the daughter of George and Magdalen (Pfeifer) Larson. She attended Catholic schools. She was united in marriage to Winfred P. Laake in Davenport on May 3, 1952. He preceded her in death in 2000.
Barbara worked as a school crossing guard for Washington Elementary School for many years.
She enjoyed doing word searches and crossword puzzles, listening to the police scanner, spending time with her family, friends, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered by all as a true spitfire to the very end.
Those left to honor her memory include her grandchildren, Dustin (Jenny Hobart) Swearinger, Magdalen “Maggie” (Kelly Wagner) Swearinger, Heather Laake and Heidi Laake; her great-grandchildren, Emma and Wyatt; her remote son, Ted Laake of Davenport; her sisters, Nancy Fleming of Bettendorf and Dorothy (Wayne) Bloomer of Davenport; her brothers Jim Laake and Joe Laake both of Davenport; her niece, Kathy Fleming and many other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Winfred and her daughter, Sheleeyne “Shaye” Swearinger.
