Betty J. Holst, 74, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf following a courageous battle with cancer.

Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, December 13, 2010 at Christ’s Family Church, 4601 Utica Ridge Rd. in Davenport, Iowa. Burial will follow at McCausland Cemetery, McCausland, Iowa. Visitation will be from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Sunday, December 12, 2010 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home of Bettendorf. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Clarissa Cook Hospice House.

She was born in Iowa City, Iowa on December 13, 1935, the daughter of Herman & Eva (Stichter) Carsten.

Betty was the cook at Christ’s Family Church Day Care Center. In earlier years, she worked at Brach’s Candy Company of Davenport and was a pre-school teacher at the former Broadview United Methodist Church of Bettendorf.

She loved to visit the gambling boats and play the slot machines. Betty was an accomplished cook and enjoyed preparing meals, cookies and other treats for her family and friends. The Chicago Cubs and Tiger Woods were two of her favorites and she enjoyed other sports as well. Her beloved family and the children at the day care center were the joys of her life and she will always be fondly remembered by those who knew & loved her.

Those left to honor her memory include her daughters, Pat Mink of Davenport & her fiancé, Bryan Clark, Wendy Holst of Andalusia, Illinois and her boyfriend, Rick Ralfs, Cindy (Terry) Wermuth of Moline, Illinois and Julie (Scott) Lange of Maquoketa, Iowa; her sons, Dennis Holst of Bettendorf and Mike (Tami) Holst of Bettendorf; fourteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her sister, Helen (Lu) Pearsall of Port Byron, Illinois; her brother, Terry Carsten of Phoenix, Arizona; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many special & dear friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, J.C. Carsten.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staffs of the Clarissa Cook Hospice House and the Intensive Care Unit of Genesis Medical Center, East Campus of Davenport for their professional & compassionate care shown to her mother during her illness.
