Beverly A. Hartwig, 60, a resident of Coal Valley, Illinois and formerly of Bettendorf, Iowa died Monday, June 21, 2004 at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus in Davenport following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, June 25, 2004 at Salem Lutheran Church, Moline, Illinois. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Thursday, June 24, 2004 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Beverly was born March 10, 1944 in Sioux City, Iowa the daughter of Roy L. & Mildred (Olson) Hanson. She was united in marriage to Larry Hartwig on August 25, 1963 in Alta, Iowa.
She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the State College of Iowa in Cedar Falls and her Master of Arts degree from Marycrest College in Davenport. She taught as a special education teacher for over 22 years for Bettendorf High School, North Scott Schools, Pleasant Valley Schools and River Hills School in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was the honored recipient of the Golden Apple Award for Educators and the First in the Nation Education Award for the functional skills program she developed and implemented at Bettendorf High School.
Beverly was a devoted member of Salem Lutheran Church where she served as Sunday School Superintendent, teacher and a member of the Stephen’s Ministry Program.
She had a special devotion and concern for children with handicaps and was an active participant in the Special Olympics Program for many years.
In her leisure time she enjoyed traveling, boating on the river and cooking. Her family & treasured friends were the most important part of her life and she spent many enjoyable hours playing board games & cards with them.
Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Larry; her daughter, Tasha Hartwig of Coal Valley; her sons & daughters-in-law, Todd & Robin Hartwig of Salem, Illinois, Trent Hartwig of Coal Valley and Tory & Annemarie Hartwig of Danbridge, Tennessee; her grandchildren, Hillery, Hanson and Haydyn; her mother, Mildred Hanson Stevenson of Cherokee, Iowa; her sister & brother-in-law, Barbara & Don Kerns of Mountain Home, Arkansas; her nephews, Steve Hanson, of North Hills, California, Scott Hanson, a teacher in Dalian, China and Jason Kerns in Arkansas; her niece, Debbie Blum in Colorado and her beloved Yorkshire Terriers, Sam and Gidget.
She was preceded in death by her father, Roy Hanson Sr.; and her brother, Roy “Sonny” Hanson Jr.
