Carita Marie Dyas, 71, a resident of Davenport, died Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Senior Star at Elmore Place in Davenport.

A Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be held at 12:30 P.M., Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Asbury United Methodist Church in Bettendorf, Iowa where she was a member. The family will receive friends from 12:00 P.M. until the time of the services on Saturday at the church. Private family burial services will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens in Davenport. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the International Myeloma Foundation, Asbury United Methodist Church Library, the Davenport Library Foundations, the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center or the University of Iowa Foundation: Chronic Disease Fund.

Carita was born December 15, 1939 in Webster City, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur E. & Carita N. (Knuths) McCullough. On June 8, 1974, she was united in marriage to Floyd Dyas at Asbury united Methodist Church.

She was a 1958 graduate of Keokuk High School and a 1962 graduate of Drake University School of Fine Arts.

Carita was an orchestra teacher for Bettendorf Community Schools from 1967 to 2003. In earlier years, she taught at Jefferson County Schools in Colorado from 1962 to 1967. She also taught English as a 2 nd Language following her retirement

In addition to Asbury United Methodist, she was a member of American String Teachers, the music Education National Conference and the National Education Foundation.

After her retirement, Carita spent many hours volunteering with the Davenport Library System, Quilts for Linus and was manager for the Senior Olympics.

Carita enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, reading, traveling, crafts, handiwork, knitting, crocheting, quilting cooking, baking and most importantly, learning.

Those left to honor her memory include her daughter and son-in-law, Gwendolyn & Jason Schaad of Geneseo, Illinois; her grandchildren, Malakai, Cooper and Finnegan Schaad; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara & Alvin Breuer of Danville, Iowa and Mary & Don Taeger of West Burlington, Iowa; and her brothers and sisters-in-law, John & Karen McCullough of Cave Junction, Oregon and Michael & Rebecca McCullough of Burlington, Iowa.

Carita was preceded in death by her parents.
