Carl L. Long, 79, a resident of Oskaloosa, Iowa and formerly of Bettendorf, Iowa and Silvis, Illinois died Saturday, October 11, 2003 at Mahaska County Hospital, Oskaloosa.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Veterans Administration Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa.
He was born March 5, 1924 in Washington, Iowa, the son of John William & Della Lavina (Sage) Long.
Carl was a handyman & laborer for many years in and around the Quad-Cities. In earlier years, he had worked for the Oscar Mayer Company in Davenport.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army-Air Corps with the 380th Bombardment Group. He was a tail gunner and participated in missions at Luzon, Ryukyus, Bismark, Archipelago and in the southern Philippines. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star.
He was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9128 of Bettendorf.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughter, Sheryl of Kingston, South Dakota; his son, Daniel Long of Bettendorf; his step-daughter, Marcelle Moeller of Davenport; his step-sons, Gary Franklin of Burlington, Iowa and Ronald D. Brady of Davenport; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and his sister, Marjorie Walraven of Oskaloosa.
Carl was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth; and his brothers, Dale, Glen, Ed, Richard & Clifford.
