A private family service for Charles Richard Smith, 90, of Bettendorf, Iowa, will take place at a later date. Charles passed away on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at his home in Bettendorf.
Charles R. Smith was born on September 22, 1934, in Lamar County, AL, the son of Garvin B. and Ozell (Malone) Smith. He married Lois B. Schafer on May 28, 1954. She preceded him in death on October 29, 2021. He worked as a foil mill operator at Alcoa and served 17 years as president of Aluminum Workers Local 105. He later worked as Vice President and Wage Engineer of ABG International Union, AFL-CIO CLC, which merged into the United Steelworkers of America. Charles’s career spanned 52 years, and he was inducted into QC AFL-CIO Hall of Fame in 2005.
Charles was a member of the Moline Church of Christ, Moline, IL was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and an Alabama Crimson Tide Football fan. He enjoyed submitting opinions to ‘letters to the editor’, visits with his grandchildren and great grandchildren (his little buddies) and routinely met with his ‘McDonald’s crew’ throughout the years.
Survivors include his daughters; Tracy Streets of Bettendorf, IA, Cathy (Marc) Vogel of Le Claire, IA, sons: David Smith of Rock Island, IL, Doug (Deb Bazer) Smith of Rock Island, IL, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, and sister, Juanita Sanders.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Lois, brother G.B. Smith and Daniel “Tony” Smith.
