Charles Jerome “Jerry” Wayne, 83 a resident of Bettendorf, passed away on December 24, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Bettendorf. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery. A prayer service will be held at 4:30 p.m. followed by visitation from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 29 th at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Memorials may be made to St. John Vianney Catholic Church.
Born on May 25, 1931 in Cahokia, IL, Jerry was the son of John William and Mae Viola (Jerome) Wayne. On December 26, 1953 in St. Louis, MO, Jerry married Joan Whelan.
Jerry served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was a supervisor with McLaughlin Body Company and also worked for Swift Company, John Morrell and D & S Auto Sales.
Jerry was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Do-Si-Do Square Dance Club, the American Legion and a former volunteer firefighter for the Cahokia Fire Department. He enjoyed music, fishing, camping, traveling, square dancing, wood crafting and gardening. Jerry was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. In their travels, Jerry and Joan visited all 50 states.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Joan; daughter, Mariann (Harold) Fortner of Grinnell, Iowa; sons, David (Suzanne) Wayne of East Moline, Michael (Kendra) Wayne of Sarasota, Florida, John (Michelle) Wayne of Oskaloosa, Iowa and Thomas (Dung) Wayne of Portland, Maine; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
