Charles M. Murphy, 74, of Davenport, died on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 11, 2006 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Visitation will be held one hour before the services on Saturday.
Burial with military honors will be held in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island Illinois at 11:00 A.M., Monday, March 13, 2006. Those wishing to attend the committal service should meet at the funeral home by 11:30 A.M. on Monday. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Charles was born June 14, 1931 in Davenport, Iowa, the son of John & Estelle (Over) Murphy. He was a graduate of St. Ambrose Academy in Davenport.
During his Army career, he served with the Ranger 3rd Airborne Company in Korea and the 1st Calvary Division in Viet Nam, where he did three tours of duty. He received four purple hearts, the Bronze Star many other achievement awards including C.I.B. and Wings.
Also when Charles did a tour in Germany, he was an accomplished football coach who helped lead the army teams to many victories. In his free time he was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing with his friends in Wisconsin.
Those left to honor his memory include his sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Les Bloomer of Davenport; his brother Robert Murphy of Bettendorf; his sister-in-law Helen Murphy of Davenport; and numerous nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Kate; and his brothers John, Mike, Tom, Kenneth and Terry.
