Conrad A. “Connie” Flick Jr., 90, owner & founder of Flick’s in Bettendorf died on Friday, October 27, 2006 at the Bettendorf Healthcare Center.
His funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 18137 Criswell St., Pleasant Valley, Iowa where he was a member. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be from 3:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Monday at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, where a Masonic service will be held at 8:00 P.M. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
He was born September 13, 1916 in Hampton, Illinois, the son of Conrad A. & Anna (Anderson) Flick Sr. On December 12, 1937, he was united in marriage to Dolores Rhodenbaugh in Missouri.
Connie graduated from Moline High School, Moline, Illinois and attended A.I.C. College. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression at the age of 16 to send money back to his family from Spokane, Washington.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army-Air Force with the 884th Air Engineer Squadron in the European Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a Tech. Sergeant and was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the American Theater Service Medal.
In early years, he worked as a district salesman for the Shell Oil Company and resided in Clinton, Iowa. On May 1, 1953, he founded Flick’s at 3715 State St. in Bettendorf. After 27 years of service, he retired in May of 1980.
Connie & his wife enjoyed wintering for many years in LaFeria, Texas where he was Past-President of the Citrus Valley Retirement Community.
His memberships included Trinity Lutheran Church where he served on the building committee, the Hamilton Masonic Lodge #664 of Bettendorf where he was Past-Master and served as building chairman, the Davenport Consistory, Kaaba Temple Shrine, the Mohassan Grotto and Club Mokan where he served on the building committee and was a Demolay Dad. In addition he was a charter member & past-president of the Bettendorf Rotary Club where he was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship Award by his fellow Rotarians. Other memberships included the Viking Club of Moline, Illinois, the Confederate Air Force, the Bettendorf Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9128 where he was a Life-Member and the Oakwood Country Club where he served as a caddy in earlier years.
Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife of 68 years, Dolores; his son, Dennis Flick of Bettendorf & grandchildren, Tim Flick, Teresa “Renee” Stafford & Ryan Flick; his son, Lee Flick of Bettendorf & grandchildren, Brookanne & Annalee Flick; and his son & daughter-in-law, Conrad & Lynn Flick III of Bettendorf and grandchildren, Amber and Andy (Melissa) Flick, his great-grandchild, Kaitlynn Flick; his sisters, Katherine Schmidt of Rock Island, Illinois and Trudy Groth of Laguna Beach, California; and many other relatives and wonderful friends.
Connie was preceded in death by his sisters, Anita Maxiener and Elsie Leskovec; and by his brother, Bill Flick.
