David C. Hurt, 60, a resident of Foley, Alabama and formerly of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus in Davenport, Iowa following a courageous battle with cancer.
A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, April 8, 2011 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. He will be laid to rest with military honors at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Genesis West Oncology Center.
He was born December 6, 1950 in Rock Island, Illinois, the son of Joseph R. & Edna A. (Garr) Hurt and was a 1969 graduate of Davenport Central High School. David served in the U. S. Army as a military policeman stationed at Camp Casey in South Korea and was honorably discharged as a Specialist 4 th Class in 1971.
In 1972, he began his career at the Rock Island Arsenal as a machinist apprentice, then as a technical support specialist for the manufacturing unit. He then was promoted to a production contractor, an equipment specialist and retired in 2004 as an industrial specialist after 32 years of faithful service.
On September 23, 2000, he was united in marriage to Nancy L. Smith at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
In 2005, he retired to Foley, Alabama where he enjoyed white sand, warm winters and Alabama football. David especially enjoyed working part-time after his retirement at The Home Depot in Bettendorf and in Foley along with and because of the wonderful people he worked with.
He loved being outdoors and spent many enjoyable hours with his family and friends at his camp on the Wapsi River.
David was a life-member and two-time commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9128 of Bettendorf and was also a member of the American Legion Post 99 in Foley, Alabama. He was instrumental in the design & dedication of the Veteran’s Memorial at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Bettendorf. It was because of David’s suggestion that the park’s name was changed from Middle Park to Veteran’s Memorial Park.
David will forever be lovingly remembered by his wife, Nancy; his daughter, Teresa (Gregory) Hutcheson & their children, Ashtyn, Nathaniel & Brayden, all of Bettendorf; his sisters, Gerri “Sis” (Kent) Bowers of Davenport, Edna “Jodie” (Donald) Streat of Davenport and Inez (Delbert) Stewart of Coatsville, Missouri and their families; his step-daughter, Elizabeth (Barry) Sprout & their children Jordyn & Jayci, all of New Franklin, Missouri; his step-son, Robert (Dionne) Bergeson & their children, Brody & Malaki, all of Bettendorf; and several nieces & nephews.
David was preceded in death by his parents; and numerous aunts & uncles.
