David Stout

June 11, 1949 — May 24, 2023

Asheville N.C.

David Bruce Stout, 73, of Asheville, NC, passed away on May 24, 2023, at his home.

David was born on June 11, 1949, to William Jewell Stout and Harriet Cracraft Stout in Indianapolis, IN. He attended Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, graduating in 1967. David went on to study at Indiana University and then earned a degree at Indiana College of Mortuary Science in 1973.

During his professional career as a mortician, David worked at funeral homes in central Indiana, and during the 1980s, he owned a funeral home in Wabash, IN. After transitioning to funeral supply and chemical sales in the early 1990s, David moved to Iowa and covered the Midwest region for Pierce Chemicals. He resided in Iowa until he retired in 2013, after which he moved to North Carolina to be closer to his children and grandchildren.

David was an avid racing fan. He especially enjoyed the IndyCar Series, Formula 1, and NASCAR, and would have been terribly upset that he passed four days before the Indy 500, which he considered an epic holiday event. Aside from racing, he had a strong interest in history; specifically, American Presidential history, with a particular proclivity for the James K. Polk, Andrew Johnson, and Abraham Lincoln administrations. He loved cooking, reading, listening to classical music, doting on his Boston Terrier, Bug, and expanding his unique art collection. He was a consummate storyteller with his friends, family, and neighbors.

David was predeceased by his father (2000) and mother (2017), in addition to his beloved beagle, Enzo (2020), whom he considered a soul mate. He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn E. Stout, of Raleigh, NC, his son, Andrew D. Stout, of Asheville, NC, and three beautiful granddaughters: Penelope Oliver, 15, Corinne Stout, 4, and Allison Stout, 2. He also has a sister, Karen Stout, who resides in Denver, CO.

Graveside services will be held 12:00 pm on Sunday, July 9, 2023 at Glendale Cemetery, LeClaire, IA

Private memorial services will be held in the near future in the Midwest and Asheville.

Donations may be made in his memory to Brother Wolf Animal Rescue.
