David (Dave) Brethauer, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at Trinity at Terrace Park in Bettendorf. His funeral service will be held Thursday, January 8th at Asbury United Methodist Church in Bettendorf at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 7th at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM, and will also be held at the church an hour prior to the service. Burial will be held at Davenport Memorial Park, where military honors will be conducted.
Dave was born on September 29th, 1930 to Hazel (O’Leary) and WLF Brethauer in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dave graduated from Peabody High School in Pittsburgh and Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he received a BA in Sociology and was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. Dave married Barbara Ann Barger on August 23, 1953. Dave served in the US Army during the Korean War. He then made his career in the insurance industry, retiring in 1991.
Dave had a great love for sports and played football at Coe. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan, as well as an Iowa Hawkeye fan. During his retirement, he enjoyed coaching and traveling with a local ASA softball club, the Milan Aces. Dave was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Bettendorf where he served on the Board of Trustees and taught Sunday school for many years. Dave served as an Assistant Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 149 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He had a passion for history and loved sharing stories with his family. Dave will forever be remembered for his incredible sense of humor.
Dave is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children, David G. (Jean) Brethauer, Cape Coral, FL, Stephen L. (Susan Gorzney) Brethauer, Bettendorf, Daniel Brethauer, Fort Myers, FL, Barbara (David) Breiby, Bettendorf, Carrie (Glenn Clark, fiancé ) Brethauer, Downers Grove, IL and Kaye (Christopher) Tilton, Davenport, IA; his grandchildren, David J. and Matthew Brethauer, Cape Floral, FL, Stephen R. and James Brethauer, Bettendorf, Kristine Halverson, Milwaukee, WI, and Brittney Halverson, Iowa City, IA. Dave was preceded in death by his parents.
Dave’s family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the ICU nursing staff at Trinity at Terrace Park for the exceptional care they provided during Dave’s final days and also to the staff of the Iowa Masonic Health Facilities-Special Care Unit, where Dave resided for the past year. Their love and care for Dave will forever be appreciated.
Memorials may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, Iowa Masonic Health Facilities-Special Care Unit or Alzheimer’s Association-Mississippi Valley Chapter.
