DeWayne Chandler Smith, 79, a resident of LeClaire, Iowa died Monday, January 10, 2005 at Manor Care Nursing Center, Davenport, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, January 13, 2005 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf, Iowa. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery, LeClaire. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Genesis Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
He was born February 15, 1923 in Grand Mound, Iowa, the beloved son of Guy W. & Alpha M. (Chandler) Smith. On September 20, 1946, he was united in marriage to Marvel L. Ellingworth in Ada, Minnesota. She preceded him in death on March 16, 1989.
DeWayne was employed in the Land & Buildings Department of the Alcoa Company, retiring on January 1, 1986 after 33 years of service.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Draco, the USS Logan and the USS LST 1972 and was honorably discharged in 1946.
He was a former member of the Aluminum, Brick & Glassworkers Union, Local 105, the Alcoa 25-Year Club, the Davenport Moose and the LeClaire Civic Club.
DeWayne loved to go fishing and took great pride in caring for his yard, garden & flowers. He also enjoyed attending auctions & sales, playing cards with his friends & family and in earlier years, dancing with his beloved wife.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughter & son-in-law, Sandra & Carl Clark of Hampton, Illinois; his son & daughter-in-law, Don & Rita Smith of LeClaire; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his sister & brother-in-law, Ruby Darlene & Bob Grabel of Sierra Vista, Arizona; his brother & sister-in-law, Alvin & Janice Smith of Bettendorf; and his sisters-in-law, Bessie Smith of LeClaire, Esther Smith of Bettendorf and Ardis Smith of Bettendorf.
In addition to his wife, DeWayne was preceded in death by his brothers, Gale, Vernon, Lyle & Vearl.
