Donald J. “Donny” Conklin, 58, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died suddenly on Friday, May 5, 2017 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus in Davenport, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 11, 2017 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge.
Donny was born November 17, 1958 in Davenport, the son of Donald V. & Vivian H. (Peters) Conklin. A graduate of Bettendorf High School, he was united in marriage to Sharon Ruebbelke on May 5, 1979 in Davenport.
Donny opened the Conklin’s Super-Valu on West 4th Street in Davenport in September of 1983 and it became Save-A-Lot in May of 1995. He later opened the Save-A Lot store on Locust Street and additional stores in Cedar Rapids and Trenton, Missouri. Donny kept a close relation with his business family, the McVeigh’s in Kahoka, Missouri.
A diehard avid fan of the Cubs, Bears, and Hawkeyes, Donny also enjoyed golfing. He had kept a standing tee time for over 20 years every Sunday at Palmer Hills Golf Course.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Sharon; his daughter, Kelly (Brett) Fahrenkrug of Davenport; his sons, Nick Conklin of Bettendorf and Curt Conklin of Bettendorf; his granddaughter, Kirsten “Punks”; his mother, Vivian Conklin of LeClaire, Iowa; his sisters, Cristy (Tom) Bednarik of Phoenix, Arizona and Cathy (Dave) Ehrecke of LeClaire.
Donny was preceded in death by his father; and several close friends.
