Donald Schmidt

September 20, 1946 — August 4, 2017

Donald A. Schmidt, 70, of LeClaire, passed away at his home on Friday, August 4, 2017 surrounded by his loving family after a one-year battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf.  Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.  Burial will follow at Rock Island National Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the family.

Don was born September 20, 1946 in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Lyle & Henrietta (Ketelsen) Schmidt.  He entered the United States Army in 1966.  Don served in Vietnam with the 2nd of the 7th First Calvary Air Mobile and was honorably discharged in 1968.

He married his high school sweetheart, Diane R. Severt on August 1, 1992 in Pleasant Valley.

Don owned and operated Don’s Service Stations in LeClaire, Pleasant Valley and Bettendorf for 33 years, retiring in 2004.  He enjoyed living along the river and would host fishing tournaments in September every year.  An avid fan of the Cubs and Bears, he also enjoyed watching golf tournaments.  Don had also hunted turkey in earlier years.  He loved the time spent with his family, friends and grandkids.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Diane; his daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy & J.T. Hart of Davenport and Vicki & Scott MacDonald of New Vineyard, Maine; his sons and daughters-in-law, Dave Schmidt of Davenport, John & Adenise Schmidt of Rock Island, Robert & Carrie Schmidt of Blue Grass and John & Teresa Coonfare of Davenport; fifteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and countless close friends

Don was preceded in death by his parents.
