Donald E. Turner, 87, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died Monday, March 14, 2005 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus in Davenport, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday, March 18, 2005 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park where military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.
He was born June 9, 1917 in Edwardsville, Illinois, the son of Mitchell Joseph & Lilly Pearl (Bosley) Turner. On August 15, 1937, he was united in marriage to Betty Jane Collister in Tipton, Iowa. She preceded him in death on September 23, 2002.
Don was an accomplished photographer and owned & operated the Don Turner Studio in Bettendorf 35 years, retiring in 1987. Following retirement, he maintained an avid interest in photography and found a new interest in computers as well.
In earlier years, he had served as a Police Magistrate in Bettendorf and was a member & past-president of the Bettendorf Chamber of Commerce. In addition, Don was a member & former chief of the Bettendorf Auxillary Police Department and was Scoutmaster of Troop 81 in Bettendorf for many years.
During World War II, Don served in the Army-Air Corps with the 465th Bomber Group as a B-24 Bomber pilot. He flew over 35 missions in the European Theater and was honorably discharged as a Captain in 1945. He then served in the Air Force Reserve for a number of years and was honorably discharged as a Colonel.
Those left to honor his memory include his son & daughter-in-law, Rick & Barb Turner of Bettendorf; his grandchildren, Travis Turner of Davenport, Iowa & his fiancé, Kim Brown and Keith Turner & his wife, Alicia of Charleston, South Carolina; his great-grandchildren, Colby Turner and Kira Lee Roberts; his sister, June Rose Allwien of Bend, Oregon; his half-brother, Mitch Turner of Ely, Iowa; and his very special “dog buddy,” Shadow.
In addition to his wife, Don was preceded in death by his son, David Turner; his granddaughters, Kimberly and Dawn; and his brother, Louis Turner.
