Donald G. Ray, 76, of Princeton, Iowa, died Monday, April 27, 2009 at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, May 1, 2009 at Princeton Presbyterian Church in Princeton where he was a member. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Thursday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Burial with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post 246 of Moline, Illinois will be held in the Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church or to the Princeton Lions Club.
Don was born September 10, 1932 in Petersburg, Illinois, the son of George Dewey and Artie (Pritchard) Ray. He was united in marriage to Maxine Y. Simpson on July 9, 1955 in Springfield, Illinois. During the Korean Conflict, he served in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged.
Don retired in 1995 after 32 years of employment at Alcoa, Davenport Works where he had been an electrician. He was very active in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1379 and had been Union Steward at one time.
Don and Maxine enjoyed camping around the country over many years. He also enjoyed bowling, golfing, and playing softball in earlier years.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Maxine; his son, Brian (Linda) Ray of Blue Grass, Iowa; his daughters, Karen Byard, of Rock Island, Dawn (Mack) Bryson, of Johnstown, Colorado, and Linda Husske of Davenport; his grandchildren, Eddie, Michelle, Emily, Kristin, Tiffanie, Kaleb, Meckenzie and Hayley; ten great-grandchildren; his sisters, Genny Piercall and Louise McCandless, both of Springfield; his sister-in-law, Christine Ray of Portland, Oregon; and many nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Shirley & Peg; and his brothers, Roy & Richard.
Don’s family would like to express special thanks to Don’s “extended family”, the staff of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus for all their care and concern during this time.
