Donald H. Bates

Don Bates of Bettendorf, Iowa and formerly of Ottumwa, Iowa died Tuesday, May 27, 2008 after a short illness.
A life-long resident of Ottumwa, Don was a graduate of Ottumwa High School, attended Parsons College and the University of Iowa.
He was the owner of Bates Jewelers in Ottumwa.
Don served in the Iowa National Guard, Company E. Known for his wit, Don always told people he was an active member of the Radio Shack Battery Club. He also was the first president and a charter member of the Questers Chapter 1161 Rippling Water.
Don is survived by his wife, Marge; and a daughter & son-in-law, Janet & John Quinn of Bettendorf. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rene & Hubert Bates.
A graveside service will be held at a later date In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ottumwa Public Library or the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home of Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.
