Dr. Donald H. Hansen, O.D., 84, of Bettendorf, Iowa died Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at his residence.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Friday, August 6, 2010 at Davenport Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to Oak Ridge Bible Chapel of Milan, Illinois.
McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Donald was born May 11, 1926 in Davenport, the son of Dr. Henry O. & Stella (Gray) Hansen.
Don received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He then attended the Illinois College of Optometry where he earned his Degree in Optomology.
He was united in marriage to Constance Lorraine Wolf on August 6, 1955 in Davenport.
In 1968, Donald joined the Main Vision Clinic and Contact Lens Center on Main Street in Davenport where he had currently served as President. In addition, he was President of the SuperVision Research & Development Company, The American College of Ophthermology and ColorMax Technologies. He was in private practice for fifty-five years.
Don held a high level of integrity, compassion and awareness in his field and his extensive knowledge encompassed all areas of ocular technology including research, promotion and development. He worked in collaboration with the Veterans’ Hospital in Iowa City and the Schools of Ophthalmology at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics and the School of Optometry at the University of Oklahoma.
He had also authored many papers focusing on ideas and theories for Social Security reform and for the advancement of agricultural economics.
Don served as past-president of the Scott County Association for Retarded Children and the Iowa-Illinois Association for Children with Learning Disabilities. He was a charter member of the former Port of Quad-Cities Propeller Club. He was also President and Founder of the National Council of Opthalmic Inventors and the National Eye Care Foundation.
He served as a charter member of the International Olympiads of Knowledge and the Accountability Committee for Worldwide Christian Blind Mission. Other memberships included the American Academy of Syntonic Optometry, the American Optometric Association, the Iowa Optometric Association and the Davenport Rotary Club.
Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife, Connie; his daughter and son-in-law, Leslie C. & Mark Newman of Rodgers, Arkansas; and his son and daughter-in-law, Todd W. & Kathleen Hansen of Grand Rapids, Michigan; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
