Doris Cameron Whittier Nelson, 87 of Bettendorf, Iowa died Saturday, December 31, 2011 at her home.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf where the family will meet with friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held 9:00 a.m. Thursday, January 5, 2012 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Her final resting place will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal joining her late husband, Charles B. Nelson, who passed away on February 29, 2008.

Doris was born June 7, 1924 in St. Paul, Minnesota, a daughter of Horace & Grace (Skoglund) Whittier. She and Charles, “Chuck” graduated from Hamline University, St. Paul and were married on August 17, 1948 in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Doris was an art teacher and in later life a children’s shoe fitter. She enjoyed many years as a member of Lake Davenport Sailing Club with her husband, and camping with family in earlier years. Bird watching and feeding was a favorite pastime in her final years. She liked solving crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her sons, Tom Nelson, who was her caregiver, of Bettendorf and Jack (Debbie) Nelson of Millington, Tennessee; daughter Nancy (Howard) Goettsch of Long Grove; Grandsons, Soren and Garth Jacobson both of Davenport, Matthew Nelson of Memphis, Tennessee; five great grandchildren, and a sister Kathryn (Harrison) Gough of Pebble Beach, California.

Doris was preceded in death by her twin sister, Donna Clingan, and a sister, Jean Moffitt; and brothers-in-law, Arthur Clingan and George Moffitt.

Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
