Doris was born September 8, 1912 to William and Susan (Langfield) McDowell in Des Moines, Iowa. She married Gerald Kinney in 1934 and they had one child, Phyllis Jean Kinney. She worked at the old International Plant in Rock Island in 1944 where she met Henry Nelson. She later married Henry Nelson in 1945 and together they had one child, Christine Nelson. They were together until Henry died in 1999.
She was a housewife for many years raising her daughters. She then worked at Bishops Cafeteria until she retired.
Doris and Henry enjoyed traveling and visited many of the states in the U.S.. They also loved to go dancing at many of the dance clubs in the area. They belonged to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Davenport and she was active in the church circle there.
Doris enjoyed swimming at the YMCA and loved shopping in the area stores. They liked eating out and going to the many family functions such as weddings, birthdays and showers.
Doris had two daughters, Phyllis (Dennis) Brown and Christine (James) Wulf. She had eight grandchildren, Mike Brown, Mark Brown, Tim (Karen) Brown, Debra (Andy) Neyrinck, Lisa (Paul) Swiney, Steve Wulf, Susan (Kelly) and Traci Wulf. Together they have her twenty great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She loved them all and always enjoyed being with them and watching them grow up.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and three sisters, she being the youngest. She loved spending time with them whenever they got together and was especially close to her sisters, Ellen and Carol. She leaves many nieces and nephews that meant a lot to her.
She will be greatly missed especially by her two daughters, Phyllis and Chris. We would like to thank all the nurses and aides at Station 3 Ridgecrest Village for all the care they gave our mother.
