Dorothy C. Harling, 96, a resident of Eldridge, Iowa died on Saturday, October 7, 2006 at the Davenport Lutheran Home, Davenport, Iowa.
Her funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at Faith Lutheran Church, Eldridge where she was a member. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church of Davenport, or to the Davenport Lutheran Home fund for a Handicapped Van. It was Dorothy’s greatest wish that the van could be purchased so that she could go for the monthly rides with the other residents. Chambers Funeral Home, Eldridge is assisting the family with arrangements.
She was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 10, 1910 to Charles & Edith (Johnson) Hagen. The family moved to Durant, Iowa in 1918 and there she met Clyde Harling. They were married in Davenport on July 31, 1929 and celebrated 55 years of marriage before Clyde died on November 6, 1984.
Dorothy worked at the Bell Telephone Company in the 1930’s and later worked at the Physician’s & Surgeon’s Exchange, a telephoning answering service, in Davenport.
Dorothy was very active at St. Mark Lutheran Church during the 40 years that she was a member there. When she moved to Eldridge in 1994, she joined Faith Lutheran Church. She served as a volunteer for RSVP for many years and especially enjoyed volunteering at the Quad-City Symphony office. In 1999, she was awarded her 75-year membership pin from the Royal Neighbors of America. She also belonged to the Women’s Bowling Association for 50 years.
“Nonnie” was always happiest when all of her family was together and she could share in that fellowship. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter & son-in-law, Judi & Don Hamann with whom she resided for many years; four granddaughters, Susan Hamann of Davenport, Patricia (Dave) Hoffmann of Long Grove, Iowa, Teresa Herberg of Eldridge and Marji (Mike) Szwaya of Naperville, Illinois; her grandson, Lyn (Diane) Hamann of Sanford, Florida; her great-grandchildren, Meghan Hoffmann of Chicago, Illinois, Melissa Hoffmann of Peoria, Illinois, Mallory Hoffman of Long Grove, Jordan & Taylor Herberg of Eldridge, Ashley Hamann of Knoxville, Tennessee and Matthew Szwaya of Naperville; a nephew, Dick Hagen of Walcott, Iowa; and a niece, Helen Hagen of Davenport. She will be missed by all.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Clarence Hagen, a sister, Edith who lived just eleven months, a grandson, Scott William Martin and a nephew, Roger Hagen.
