Douglas A. “Doug” Geerts, 46, a resident of Davenport, Iowa passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Rochester Methodist Hospital-Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota surrounded by his loving family after more than a year of a courageous battle with leukemia.
His funeral service will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday, January 25, 2008 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf, Iowa. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Thursday and from 12:30 P.M. to 1:30 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
Doug was born January 12, 1962 in Davenport to James & Lois (Carpenter) Geerts and was a 1980 graduate of Bettendorf High School. He was united in marriage to Bonnie Sue Barwick on August 6, 1988 in Davenport.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1982 to 1986.
Doug worked at IBP in Joslin for 8 years and more recently for Solar Plastics of Davenport where he worked for 13 years until he became ill. In addition, he also worked at Godfather’s Pizza as a delivery person.
He was an avid NASCAR fan (especially Rusty Wallace), enjoyed going to car shows, collecting Hot Wheels and going to the Cordova Dragway in Cordova, Illinois. Doug was the proud owner of a 1967 Mustang and a 1972 Pinto. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Bonnie; his daughter, Shelby and his son, Adam, both at home; his mother & step-father, Lois & Dean Evans of Donahue, Iowa; his brothers, Randy Geerts of Davenport and Brian (Karla) Geerts of Bettendorf; his step-daughter, Brandie (Josh) Kain of Davenport; 2 step-grandchildren, Laura and Joey Kain; his mother-in-law, Shirley Barwick of Davenport; and a host of friends and extended family.
His father, his father-in-law, his grandparents, several uncles and his niece preceded Doug in death.
