Douglas D. Brown, 76, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Monday, May 19, 2008 at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus in Davenport, Iowa.
His funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, May 22, 2008 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
He was born November 1, 1931 in Lincoln, Nebraska, the son of Harry & Flora (Waite) Brown. On February 10, 1951, he married his childhood sweetheart – the girl next door – Edith Ann McDougall in Rock Island, Illinois and they enjoyed 57 wonderful years together.
Douglas was a 1949 graduate of United Township High School in East Moline, Illinois and attended the University of Nebraska.
He enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard in 1951 and faithfully served for 27 years. He retired in 1978 as a Lt. Colonel and Battalion Commander at the Brady St. Armory in Davenport.
Doug was employed as an Industrial Engineer, retiring from General Machine & Grind of Aledo, Illinois in 1992.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing and boating. His children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren were a very special part of his life and he enjoyed attending their numerous and many activities over the years.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Edith; his children, Doug (Teri) Brown of Davenport, Jan (Denny) Glancy of Bettendorf, Sandi (Dave) Schutt of Iowa City, Iowa and Dave Brown of Boulder, Colorado; twelve grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his brothers, Don (Mary June) Brown and Dennis (Phyllis) Brown, all of Bettendorf and numerous nieces & nephews.
His parents preceded him in death.
