Doyle W. McCully, 82, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at Manor Care Utica Ridge in Davenport, Iowa.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at the First Baptist Church, 3593 Middle Rd. in Bettendorf. He will be laid to rest at the Rock Island National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the the Bettendorf Rotary Foundation, the “Run with Carl” or a local charity of the donor’s choice.
He was born in Saltillo, Mississippi on June 11, 1931, the son of Thomas & Gladys (Norris) McCully and was a graduate of the University of Mississippi (“Ole Miss”) where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. He later earned his Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from the Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He also received his MBA in later years. On October 15, 1951, he was united in marriage to Gladys Elizabeth Erismann in Passaic, New Jersey
During the Korean Conflict, Doyle served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged as a Tech Sergeant in 1954.
Doyle worked for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers beginning his career in Huntington, West Virginia and later in Washington, D.C. He came to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Rock Island, Illinois as Chief of the Engineering Division. In 1997, he retired as Deputy for Project Management and Assistant District Engineer after 43 years of faithful service.
He was a longtime and loyal member of the Bettendorf Rotary Club where he served as President in 1983 and as District Governor in 1987. In addition, Doyle’s memberships included the First Baptist Church of Bettendorf, the American Legion and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was also a member and past-president of the American Military Engineers and served on a variety of boards, committees and community efforts for many years. Doyle was a tireless volunteer and was always ready and willing to help where help was needed. He will also be remembered as a dedicated and faithful member of the Iowa Republican Party.
He was an avid runner, participating in the Bix Road Race for 33 consecutive years and the Run with Karl for many years. Doyle also enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing golf with his many friends.
Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife, Gladys; his children, Beverly (Mark) Magrane of Redmond, Washington and Kenneth (Kim) McCully of Cypress, Texas; and his grandchildren, Kiera Magrane and Ryan Magrane.
Doyle was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Douglas McCully; and an infant sister, Edith Mae.
