Edna M. Cannon, 92, of Bettendorf, died Sunday, July 20, 2014, at the Iowa Masonic Health Facility in Bettendorf.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, July 24, 2014, at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf.  Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm. to 7:00 pm. on Wednesday at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Savior Presbyterian Church in Argo, Iowa where she was a member or to a charity of the Donor’s choice.

Edna was born February 12, 1922, on the family farm in LeClaire Township.  She was the daughter of James & Grace (Wilson) Hamilton.  Edna attended school near her family farm, graduating from LeClaire High School.  During World War II she enlisted in the Women’s Marine Corps with two friends.  She served as an airplane mechanic in El Toro, California.

Edna was united in marriage to Howard Cannon Jr.  They eloped to the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, telling friends they were going to a University of Iowa football game.  He preceded her in death on September __, 1974.

She was a homemaker, volunteer and very active in her church.  She recently received the Presidential Lifetime of Service Award for her volunteer work.  Edna was also a crafter, always having some project on her sewing machine.

Those left to honor her memory include her daughter, Deborah Cannon of Moline, Illinois; her much loved Hamilton nieces and nephew, Janice (Mark) Carpenter, Becky Hamilton, Kathy Hamilton and Steve (Dawn) Hamilton; also, Bob (Joyce) McDonald and Marge (Bob) Tuftee.

In addition to her husband, Howard, she was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother and sister-in-law, Howard & Elaine Hamilton.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at the Iowa Masonic Health Facility for the compassionate care they provided for Edna during her 2 ½ years at the facility.

And now a final word from Edna: “Love to all my family and friends that I’ve met along the way.”
