Edward Van Hecke, 93, a resident of Davenport, Iowa died Sunday, June 27, 2004 at Bettendorf Healthcare Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf, Iowa. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice.
He was born April 4, 1911 in Joslin, Illinois, the son of Edward & Frances (Kampe) Van Hecke. On March 15, 1947, he married Norma L. Schluensen in Davenport. Norma preceded him in death on December 10, 1990.
Ed was employed as a livestock sorter at the Oscar Mayer Company for 25 years.
During World War II, he served in the U. S. Army as a medic with the 137th General Hospital. Following the war, he was discharged as a Tec/5 and was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, the World War II Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and two Overseas Bars.
In his leisure time he enjoyed hunting and working in his yard. He was an avid gun enthusiast and enjoyed collecting bottles & other trinkets of interest.
Those left to honor his memory include his step-son, Wayne Silkwood & his wife, Kathy of Evergreen, Colorado; his sister, Margaret Behr of Davenport; several nieces & nephews; and his very special friends, Beth Hodges of Davenport; and Joe Ven Horst of Bettendorf.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary, Emma & Louise; and by his brothers, Henry & Augustus.
