Eileen Ann (Alvin) Ewers, age 80, passed away on February 9, 2011, after a courageous battle with COPD and lung cancer at her daughter's home in Princeton, Iowa.
Funeral Services and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, February 12, 2011 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Long Grove, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. until the time of the services on Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery in Davenport. Memorials may be made to Genesis Hospice who helped take care of her the last few years.
She was born in Brockton, Montana, on April 4, 1930 to Ethel (Conley) and Lawrence Alvin. Her family moved to Wisconsin in her early teens.
She married Ross J. Ewers on November 27, 1950. Eileen worked prior to starting a family, at a candy factory in Davenport and later at Oscar Mayer in Davenport.
When she started her family, she became a wonderful and loving homemaker of five children. She often took care of her many nieces and nephews, when her children were young.
She was well-known for her famous chocolate chip cookies in the "Folger's can" that none of her children have been able to duplicate. Her family was her life and she gave her all to them, and her Savior Jesus Christ. She was a devout Catholic, and said prayers day and night for all who were in need of God's touch. She gave her love and attention to all in need even when she was tired herself. She was quoted recently saying," The golden years ain't so golden, they're a little bit tarnished." May she rest in peace, in the loving arms of her loving Savior.
Eileen is survived by her son Dennis and his wife Theresa of Eldridge; her daughter Debra Harry and her husband Joel, whom she resided with when she could no longer care for herself; her son Dale and his wife Neta of Davenport; her daughter Diane Davis and her husband Greg of Wheatland; her grandchildren, Brian Ewers of Bettendorf, Lynn Ewers of Davenport, Paige Ewers of Eldridge, Michael Harry of Princeton and Sara and Katie Davis of Wheatland; her step-grandchildren Ron Stout of East Moline and Connie Stout of Rinson; her sister Mary Hart of Wisconsin; her brother Mike Alvin of Illinois; a special niece and nephew, Theresa Lang and Bob Chenoweth of Illinois; and her special feathered friend, Angel, whom kept her company.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ross of 58+ years; her parents; and her toddler sister Margaret Theresa. Her eldest son, David, passed away in May of 1989. Her sister Elizabeth and her brother John, sister-in-law Karen and brother in-law Marvin Hart also preceded her in death. May they all be gathered together in eternal heavenly peace.
She would like us to give a very special thank you to all her doctors, especially, Dr. Geick and Dr. Nader, whom treated her like their own mother and gave us three extra years with her that we would otherwise not have had. Special thanks to all the nurses that took care of Eileen during her stays in the hospital and who gave her a "special award" for being their best patient. A very special thank you to Sandy Jacobsen, her hospice nurse, whom she loved for caring and helping guide her in her journey home. The family would also like to thank Marcy Bell, her social worker, and Amanda who cared for both mom and dad.
