Elaine Idell (Rose) Hughes, 90, a resident of Bettendorf, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, June 29, 2014 following a courageous 17 year battle with cancer.
Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Thursday with an Eastern Star service at 1:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Genesis Hospice.
Born October 16, 1923 in New London, IA, Elaine was the daughter of F. B. and Vada Belle (Parks) Rose. On December 6, 1947 in Washington, IA, she married Wendell I. Hughes.
Elaine attended nurses training at Burlington Protestant Hospital; she served women and children as a labor and delivery nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital in Davenport for many years. A career change brought her to VNA as a Visiting Nurse, then to Davenport’s Maternal Health Center now called Edgerton Women’s Health of the Quad Cities. She was an active member of Bettendorf Presbyterian Church, Veteran of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, and Order of the Easter Star Chapter 178 in Davenport.
A devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother she is survived by her husband of 66 years, Wendell Hughes; three children, Donald R. Hughes of Eldridge, Ronald L. (Kris Adams) Hughes of Williamston, MO and Cinda (Steve) Beert of Blue Grass; grandchildren, Chad (Amy) Beert and Amy (Steve Nordeen) Beert; great-grandchildren, William, Olivia and Eden Beert-Nordeen and Landon and Hannah Beert.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her only brother, Jack Rose.
The family would like to thank Genesis Hospice for the compassionate care provided to Elaine and her family at the end of her life.
