Elizabeth A. “Betsy” Freitag, 89, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa, died on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at the Iowa Masonic Health Facility in Bettendorf.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, April 24, 2023, at St. James Lutheran Church, 1705 Oak St. in Bettendorf.  Burial will follow at the Rock Island National Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. on Sunday at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Church, the Bettendorf Lions Club or CASI.

She was born March 7, 1934, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Hugo and Ethel (Bell) Jacobs and was a 1951 graduate of Burlington (Iowa) High School.  She was united in marriage to William C. Freitag in 1953 in the Army Chapel at Ft. Dix, New Jersey where Bill was serving in the U.S. Army.  He preceded her in death on November 21, 2002.

Betsy worked at the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency as a secretary in the Special Education Consultants Department for 13 years, retiring in June of 1993.

Her memberships included St. James Lutheran Church, the Women of the ELCA, the church Senior Choir, the Center for Active Seniors (CASI), the CASI Golden Tones Chorus, the QC Plus 60 Club, DARSPA (Davenport Area Retired School Personnel Association) and the Bettendorf Lionels.

In her spare time, she loved doing crossword puzzles and enjoyed playing cards. Singing and music were very important to her, and the love and companionship of her family were dear to her heart.

Those left to honor her memory include her children, Roger (Susan) Freitag of Davenport, Kathleen (Zach) Melby of Davenport, Gail (Mike) Yates of Stanwood, Iowa, Lora (Mark) Gwin of Bettendorf and Ruth Anne (Robert) Morava of Williams Bay, Wisconsin; her grandchildren, Dan Freitag, Sarah (Freitag) Feipel, Merridith (Skovronski) VanDerGinst, Molly (Skovronski) White, Jeffrey Yates, Matthew Yates, Mara (Gwin) Ahles-Iverson, Travis Gwin, Cody Gwin, Robert Morava III and Nathan Morava; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Helen, Edith and Evelyn, and her brothers, Edward, Bob and Glenn.
