Elmer L. Brown, 90, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Monday, August 21, 2006 at Pathway Hospice at Terrace Park, Bettendorf.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 24, 2006 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Pathway Hospice or to Gilda’s Club of the Quad-Cities.
He was born September 6, 1915 in Princeton, Iowa, the son of Harry E. & Margaret Mae (Fletcher) Brown. On November 16, 1945, he was united in marriage to Hazel J. Hansen in Davenport, Iowa. She preceded him in death on March 12, 1992.
Elmer retired in 1979 from the Oscar Mayer & Company of Davenport where he had worked for 27 years. In earlier years, he farmed in rural Scott County. He was a member of Our Savior Presbyterian Church of Argo, Iowa.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Rhineland, central Europe, Tunisia, Sicily, Rome, Naples, Foggia and southern France. He was honorably discharged as a Technicain 5th Grade in 1945 and was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 8 Bronze Battle Stars.
The special joy in Elmer’s life were his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid sports fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Chicago Cubs and enjoyed watching girl’s softball as well. His dogs, “Spooky” and “Duchess” were great companions to Elmer for many years.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughters, Elaine (Tyrone) Miller of Rushville, Nebraska, Barb Loncarich of Bettendorf, Nancy (Tom) Moffit of LeClaire, Iowa and Shirley (DeWayne) Blank of Long Grove, Iowa; his sons, Merle Brown of Davenport and James Brown of Bettendorf; his grandchildren, Leslie, Jeanette, Chris, Amanda, Miki, Stephanie, Tori, Beth, Megan, Linsey, Adam & Molly; seven great-grandchildren; his brother, Walter Brown of LeClaire; and his special friend, Jo Orr of Bettendorf.
In addition to his wife, Elmer was preceded in death by his sister, Pearl Ormsby; an infant sister, Stella; and his brothers, Ray Brown & Howard Brown.
