Ernest L. “Ernie” Gordon, 79, a resident of Davenport, Iowa died on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa.
His funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 26, 2008 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.
He was born October 30, 1928 in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Harley & Pearl (Hawkins) Gordon. On November 25, 1950, he was united in marriage to Betty J. McGill in Davenport. She preceded him in death on December 12, 1999.
For 16 years, Ernie was employed at K & K Hardware in Bettendorf. His many friends and customers will always remember his friendly face and helpful nature. Ernie retired in 2005.
NASCAR racing, specifically Jeff Gordon, was a favorite of Ernie’s. He enjoyed collecting Jeff Gordon die cast cars & trucks and his collection practically outgrew his house. In addition, he loved to watch the Chicago Bears, Cubs and the Bulls (during the Michael Jordan years) and was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes as well.
Following World War II and before the Korean Conflict, Ernie served in the U.S. Army.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughters, Debbie (Donald) Mundy of Baytown, Texas and Brenda (Rick) Hahn of Ormond Beach, Florida; his sons, Terry (Christine) Gordon of Davenport and Gary Gordon of Bettendorf; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; his sisters, Sandy (Lloyd) DeShane of Cambridge, Illinois and Ida Steepleton of Seaton, Illinois; and his brother, Robert (Patty) Gordon of Rock Island, Illinois.
In addition to his wife, Ernie was preceded in death by his sisters, Harleen Kester and Margaret Cobb; and by his parents.
