Eston E. Lee, 81, a resident of Davenport, Iowa died Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at his home following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, January 2, 2004 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Davenport.
He was born May 6, 1922 in Smithfield, North Carolina, the son of Preston & Minnie Frances (Hayes) Lee. He was united in marriage to Vera M. Hartman in Dillon County, South Carolina on December 27, 1944. She preceded him in death on May 27, 1988.
Eston was employed as supervisor of shipping at the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring in 1979 after many years of service.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army with the 23rd Infantry. He was wounded in action in Normandy on June 13, 1944 and was later honorably discharged in 1946. Upon his discharge, he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a life-member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 828 in Davenport.
He loved animals, was an accomplished woodworker and loved to go fishing. His grandchildren were the special joy in his life and he treasured the times spent with them. In addition, he was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Bears.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughters & sons-in-law, Cheryl & Mark Potter, Debra & James McAllister and Anita & Fred Veasey, all of Davenport; his grandchildren, Angie, Eric, Carey, Erin, Heather, Mathew, Michael, Gabriel & Miranda; and his great-grandchildren, Collin, Raven, Madison & Tyler.
The family would like to extend their special thanks to the Genesis Visiting Nurses and toBarb Hanson & Rich Toohill for their loving care during his illness..
He was preceded in death by his son, Donald; and by six sisters & brothers.
