Everett L. “Bud” Hopping, 82, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa and formerly of Moline, Illinois died on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Trinity Bettendorf.
Services to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Abingdon Cemetery in Abingdon, Illinois where military honors will be conducted by the Abingdon American Legion Post 381. Memorials may be made to the American Legion.
He was born in Abingdon on October 27, 1931, the son of Ira and Sarah Mae (Cover) Hopping, On October 8, 1952, he was united in marriage to Maxine J. Roberts in Abingdon and they have enjoyed nearly 62 years of marriage.
During the Korean Conflict, Bud enlisted in the U.S. Navy and after four years of service was honorably discharged as a Boson’s Mate 3 rd Class.
He was employed as a machine operator for the Caterpillar Company, retiring in 1987 after 20 years of faithful service. During his working career, Bud was a devoted member of the UAW Local 215. He served the Union in many capacities over the years, including various leadership offices, editor of the newsletter and contract negotiator.
Bud’s memberships included Asbury United Methodist Church of Bettendorf and the American Legion Post 381 of Abingdon.
He was an avid fisherman and loved the trips to Hayward, Wisconsin every year with his family. Even though his family did not share his love of fishing, they enjoyed being together in the beautiful northern Wisconsin wilderness.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Maxine; his daughers, Beverly (Michael) Reed of Bettendorf and Peggy Newman of Bettendorf & her significant other, Karl Jahns; his grandchildren, Sarah (Ben) Blanchard, Dani Ricketts & her fiancé, Brett Wiebler, Lindsey Newman & her significant other, James Cox and Mica Ricketts & her significant other, Andy Frandsen; his sister, Ilene Stanbaugh of Aurora, Illinois; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and wonderful friends.
Bud was preceded in death by his sister, Doris Crabtree; his brothers, Clayton, Marshall, Marvin, Dale and Don; and by his son-in-law, Rob Tyler.
