Everett Wayne Lemons, 85, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus in Davenport following an extended battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Private family services will be held at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Contributions in his memory may be made to the First Christian Church of Davenport where he was a member.
He was born May 9, 1922 in Lineville, Missouri, the son of Jerry & Ada (Hartley) Lemons. On August 24, 1956, he was united in marriage to Virginia E. Innis at First Christian Church in Davenport.
Wayne was employed as a burner & grinder at Sivyer Steel Company of Bettendorf, retiring after 30 years of service.
During World War II, he served in the U. S. Army with the 87th Mountain Infantry in the North Appennines, the Po Valley and the Aleutian Islands. Upon his honorable discharge in 1945, he was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the American Service Medal.
In addition to the church, he was a Life-Member of the Davenport Moose Lodge #28.
In his leisure time, Wayne enjoyed fishing, hunting and tending to his vegetable garden. He gave away much of the produce he grew to area families and charitable organizations and when it came to helping others, he was always ready to lend a hand.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Virginia; his sons, Dave (Terry) Lemons and Tom (Jeri Jones) Lemons, all of Bettendorf; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his sisters, Ethel (Lynn) Harris of Nevada, Iowa, Gwen Moss of Sedalia, Missouri and Elaine Vinzant of Nevada, Iowa.
His daughter, Margaret Ann and a granddaughter preceded him in death.
