Ferne D. Hammill ,84, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died Monday, November 03, 2003 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus in Davenport.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, November 8, 2003 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM to Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
She was born April 19, 1919 in Pleasant Valley, Iowa, the daughter of Harvey & Hazel (Malchau) Blackman. She attended Davenport High School and was also a graduate of Brown’s Business College. On May 30, 1941 she married Paul L. Hammill in LeClaire, Iowa. He preceded her in death on October 23, 2003.
Ferne owned and operated Di’s Dinette in Davenport for a number of years. She and her husband were the resident managers of Park View Trailer City in Bettendorf. In addition, she was employed at the Sheltered Workshop in Davenport for a number of years. Even when she was not working she still participated with other parents in planning & helping with activities for the kids.
In her spare time, she liked to be the scorekeeper when bowling, traveling & reading. She also enjoyed playing the organ until the time of her death.
Those left to honor her memory include her daughter, Diane Hammill of Bettendorf; her sister, Shirley Zinger of Pleasant Valley who cared for Ferne in her home until shortly before her passing and several nieces & nephews.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her sister, Edna Hentze; her brother, Arlie Blackman and her parents.
