Fred H. Gertz, 88, of Eldridge, Iowa, died Saturday, November 22, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Chambers Funeral Home in Eldridge. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Joy Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Genesis Hospice.
Fred was born October 3, 1926 in Eldridge, the son of Harvey and Ruby (Randolph) Gertz. He was united in marriage to Edith Eggert on November 28, 1947 at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Davenport. She preceded him in death on March 3, 2012
Fred served his country in the United States Navy from 1944 – 1946 during World War II. Fred was a rural mail carrier for 30 years. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Eldridge, the American Legion Post 639 in Eldridge, Veteran of Foreign Wars and Rural Letter Carriers Association. Fred enjoyed wood carving, fishing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughters, Carol (Robert) Roe of Long Grove, Iowa and Jeni (Leon) Green of Long Grove; his sons, Henry Gertz of Bellevue, Iowa and Richard (Darcy) Gertz of Eldridge; his grandchildren, Justin and Joshua Roe, Nate and Jake Green, Heather Doray, Dana Buesing and Stacy Gertz; and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Kenneth Fred Gertz; and his brother, Earl Gertz.
