Fred Manley, 79, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died Saturday, October 25, 2003 at his home following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
He was born May 27, 1924 in East St. Louis, Illinois, the son of Fred Claude & Edna Mary (Voyles) Manley. He married Helen Bernice Richmond in East Peoria, Illinois on September 25, 1948.
Fred was a carpenter & cabinetmaker. He was employed by Nordeen’s Kitchens in Davenport for over 40 years, retiring in 1986.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army with the 3232nd Engineer Batallion in Rhineland & Central Europe. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946, he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Battle Stars, 2 Overseas Service Bars, 1 Service Stripe and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9128 of Bettendorf. During his leisure time, he enjoyed boating & fishing on the river.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Helen; his daughter & son-in-law, Cindy & Edward Couvillon of Maywood, Nebraska; his son & daughter-in-law, Fred & Shelly Manley Jr. of Warsaw, Missouri; six grandchildren; and his brother, Richard Manley of Omaha, Nebraska.
Fred was preceded in death by a granddaughter; his half-sister, Madeline; and his half-brother, Floyd.
