Fritz P. Schlitter

Fritz P. Schlitter, 82, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died Wednesday, January 22, 2004 at the Bettendorf Healthcare Center.
Funeral services will be held at 5:00 P.M. Sunday, January 25, 2004 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Monday at Sixteen Cemetery, rural Monona, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the family.
He was born March 15, 1921 in Allamakee County, Iowa, the son of Otto A. & Pearl (Cahoon) Schlitter. On August 18, 1942, he was united in marriage to Darlene T. Chapin in Kahoka, Missouri.
Fritz was employed as a turbine operator at the Iowa/Illinois Gas & Electric Company, Riverside Generating Station in Bettendorf for over 38 years. He retired in 1982.
He was a longtime member of the Izaac Walton League, Mt. Joy, Iowa and was musically gifted. He could play the guitar, banjo, organ, harmonica and virtually any other instrument by ear. Hunting, fishing, camping, playing cards & bowling were some of his favorite activities. Fritz was an accomplished mechanic, a hard worker and a man who could fix just about anything. More than anything else, his family, especially his grandchildren, were by far the greatest joy in his life. Even though he will be sadly missed, he will always be fondly remembered by those who knew & loved him.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Darlene; his daughters & son-in-law, Pat Oaks of Bettendorf and Linda & Terry Johnson of Coal Valley, Illinois; his son, Buster Schlitter of LeClaire, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and his sister & brother-in-law, Bertha & Chester Swanson of Muscatine, Iowa.
Fritz was preceded in death by a great-grandson; six sisters; and four brothers.
