Geneva A. Ries, 96, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the Iowa Masonic Health Facility in Bettendorf.
Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, February 6, 2010 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church of Bettendorf where she was a longtime member. She will be laid to rest at Holy Family Cemetery in Davenport, Iowa. Visitation will be from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Friday at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf where a prayer service will be held at 3:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Genesis Hospice or Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
She was born December 17, 1913 in Pipestone, Minnesota, the beloved daughter of Cornelius & Anna (Schafer) Buckley. On August 18, 1931, she was united in marriage to George A. Ries in Rapids City, Illinois. He preceded her in death in November of 1972.
Geneva retired from Davenport Assumption High School Food Services in 1995 after 37 years of faithful service.
In addition to the church, she was a member of the Bettendorf Senior Citizens where she enjoyed playing cards and socializing with her many friends. She loved flowers of all kinds and took great pleasure in reading. Above all, her family was the most important part of her life and she loved all the time she spent with them. Vacations with everyone at “The Lake” in Wisconsin were a great joy for her.
Those left to honor her memory include her daughters, Jean (Richard) Bertram of Bettendorf and Margaret (Dan) Garey of Green Cove Springs, Florida; her son, Jim (Kris) Ries of Horicon, Wisconsin; her grandchildren, Nancy (Wayne) Klocke, Richard (Kathy) Bertram, Karen (Jerry) Jensen, Chuck (Sharon) Bertram, Teri (Lee) Fraysier, Tony Smith, Julie (Marc) Maskee, Dan (Nichole) Garey, Karianne (Jim) Strassburg and Amy (Travis) Heller; her great-grandchildren, Mike, Stephanie, Maggie, Eric, Tom, Matt, Chris, Brian, Andy, Jen, Amber, Zachary, Emily, Kacie, Megan, Cody & Amanda; sister-in-law Sharon Buckley Vaughn and Jim Vaughn; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to her husband, Geneva was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy; a son, Tom; her great-granddaughter, Kayla Smith; her sisters, Gladys Klindt and Josephine Swanson; and her brothers, Neal Buckley and Louis Buckley.
The family wishes to thank Sharon and Jim Vaughn, the staff at the Iowa Masonic Home, Genesis Hospice: Sandy Jacobsen, Sandy Carlton, Marcy Bell, and Mona Terry for all their care and attention. And a special thanks to Geneva’s neighbor Harry Errett for always being there for her.
